Double football upset

Both events took place yesterday.

Upset No. 1
Fourth meds lost the first Med League 2008/09 game against the Third Meds by a goal to nil. It was a very close encounter, the opening stages were dominated by the Fourth Meds and towards the end it was the Third Meds piling up the pressure on us. Somewhere in between, a wonder strike by Eamon, formerly one of our own turned out to be the winning goal. The were calls for a foul before he took the shot but nothing was given, and our failure to clear the ball properly cost us when a misplaced clearance was fully taken advantage of by the goalscorer to unleash a screamer from outside the box past the unsuspecting goalkeeper, similar to the match winning goal scored by Mike against them in last year's final which made us champions.

Despite the disappointment, the performance level by our players was commendable, some us looked a bit rusty and were tiring towards the end but after this match i'm sure we'll be all fired up to make our way to the final again hopefully. Sadly the game was marred by a couple of injuries one of which involved our captain Owen. Hopefully his knee injury would not keep him out of too many mathces for us, as he is one of our key players in the past three seasons.

Upset No. 2
Man Utd drew nil all at home in their UCL opening game against Villareal despite dominating most of the match and coming close to scoring a few times. The introduction of Ronaldo gave them the extra edge towards the end but it still wasn't good enough. The big positive from the game were that a good few players got valuable time on the pitch including captain Gary Neville, Park, Hargreaves, and Johny Evans. Hopefully they will capitalise on the remaining home game fixtures to ensure a smooth progression to the knock out stages. Coming up next is a league game fixture against Chelski at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and I have to say the prognosis looks bleak for Man Utd with new signing Berbatov currently still injured and Chelsea looking very solid in most of their games so far, but I guess I'll just hope for the best.
